Spoons make beautiful and useful gifts for weddings, anniversaries, valentines day, birthdays, housewarming gifts, or just to say, “I love you”. There is an old tradition in Scandinavian countries of carving a spoon for someone you care about and love. They were given with the hope of initiating a friendship that might lead to a more permanent relationship in the future. Over time, spoons became more ornate, demonstrating the carvers skill and good intentions, often utilizing symbols that spoke of hope and joy in a future relationship.Now, with the ever increasing interests in quality arts and crafts, especially as they relate to pleasures of the past and a simpler, more relaxed life style, there is a revival afoot of the art of spoon carving, both for general daily use in the home and for special occasions and special gifts. There is something about sharing a meal together, even a simple meal, that speaks of friendship and intimacy. Nothing better symbolizes this friendship than a hand carved wooden spoon. I have avoided making the traditionally ornate love spoons (which were generally not meant to be used) in favor of a simple, but elegant spoon that is not only beautiful to look at but a delight to use. They are hand carved mostly from Minnesota hardwood or fruit wood and finished with a non-toxic oil to enhance the beauty of the natural wood and protect it from wear and staining.
